The European Commission has issued preliminary findings to Google under the Digital Markets Act, outlining measures to ensure better interoperability with its Android system.
The proposal aims to allow competing AI services to access key Android features, enabling actions such as sending emails, ordering food, or sharing content through users’ preferred apps. Currently, many of these capabilities are largely reserved for Google’s own AI tools, including Gemini.
Under the draft measures, rival AI providers could integrate more deeply into Android devices and even be activated through custom “wake words,” giving users more flexibility and choice across the EU.
The Commission has launched a public consultation , inviting feedback until 13 May 2026. A final decision, potentially including binding measures, is expected within six months of the proceedings launched in January.
The move is part of broader efforts to enforce the DMA, which targets major digital “gatekeepers” like Google to ensure fair competition in the digital market.
