Almost one in five people in Germany aged 15 and older smoked at least occasionally in 2025, according to new figures released by Federal Statistical Office and shared by Tobacco Journal.

The survey found that 19.1% of the population smoked either regularly or occasionally this year, a figure largely unchanged from 2021. Most smokers preferred traditional cigarettes, while a smaller share used e-cigarettes.

Men continued to smoke more than women, with 22.4% of men reporting tobacco use compared with 15.8% of women. Smoking rates were highest among people aged 40 to 49, while teenagers aged 15 to 17 recorded the lowest smoking rate at 5%.
