Nineteen U.S. state and territorial Attorneys General are calling on Formula One and its governing body, the FIA, to end sponsorship deals involving nicotine and tobacco products, citing concerns about marketing to young fans.
The request, backed by tobacco industry watchdog STOP, targets promotions of nicotine pouch brands Zyn and Velo, which appear on Formula One teams and drivers. The Attorneys General argue that F1’s growing youth audience makes such sponsorships particularly concerning and urge the sport to prohibit all tobacco and nicotine-related partnerships.
STOP says Formula One’s efforts to attract younger fans through partnerships with major entertainment brands have coincided with increased visibility for nicotine products. The group points to research showing strong youth engagement with F1 on social media and warns that exposure to nicotine marketing could contribute to addiction among young people.
The call comes amid rising youth use of nicotine pouches and e-cigarettes in the United States, with public health advocates arguing that ending tobacco and nicotine sponsorships in motorsport would help reduce young people’s exposure to such marketing.
