The European Commission has awarded cloud contracts worth up to €180 million over six years to boost the EU’s control over its digital infrastructure. Four European providers were selected: Post Telecom (with CleverCloud and OVHcloud), StackIT, Scaleway, and Proximus (partnering with S3NS, Clarence and Mistral).
The move is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on non-EU technology and ensure sensitive data and services remain under European control. By selecting multiple providers, the Commission aims to avoid dependency on a single supplier and improve resilience.
The tender also sets a benchmark for “sovereign cloud” standards across Europe, while showing that European firms can meet high requirements. It leaves room for non-European technologies, provided they operate under strict conditions.
The initiative is part of a wider tech sovereignty push, with new policies on cloud, AI, chips and open source expected in the coming months.
