The European Commission has launched a targeted consultation on draft guidelines meant to clarify how artificial intelligence systems should be classified as “high-risk” under the EU AI Act.
The consultation, which opened on 19 May 2026 and runs until 23 June 2026, aims to gather feedback on the clarity and usefulness of the proposed guidance, including practical examples covering different AI use cases.
The guidelines are designed to help AI developers, providers, and users determine whether their systems fall into the high-risk category, particularly those that may impact health, safety, or fundamental rights, or are integrated into regulated products under EU law.
According to the Commission, the draft also includes an online, user-friendly format on the AI Act Single Information Platform, where stakeholders can browse examples and guidance tools to better understand classification rules.
Participation is open to a broad range of stakeholders, including AI companies, public authorities, researchers, civil society organisations, and members of the public. Feedback must be submitted via an online questionnaire, which will be used in the final version of the guidelines.
The consultation is part of the implementation process of the EU AI Act, which defines high-risk AI systems and sets stricter requirements for their development and deployment across the bloc.
