The European Commission’s new Action Plan to tackle drone threats emphasizes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G networks to detect and respond to malicious drones.

The plan proposes a multi-sensor approach powered by AI to track, identify, and differentiate drones, including swarms, in real time. To integrate data across borders, the EU will explore a Drone Incident Platform and single air display systems to provide a complete situational picture.

Leveraging 5G technology is a key priority. Its fast, precise, real-time tracking capabilities will support detection of drones, both connected and unconnected, enhancing internal security. The Commission plans a call for expressions of interest from Member States and industry to pilot 5G-based drone detection systems.

These AI and 5G initiatives aim to strengthen Europe’s preparedness, improve rapid response to drone incidents, and safeguard critical infrastructure.

The Commission will coordinate closely with Member States, industry, and the European Parliament, while promoting national drone security coordinators to oversee implementation. Funding will continue through EU programs, including Horizon Europe, the European Defence Fund, and SAFE loans.
