The European Commission has opened a public consultation to review the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD), which coordinates national rules across the EU for traditional TV, on-demand services, and video-sharing platforms.
The review, part of the 2026 Commission work programme, aims to modernize rules for a rapidly changing media landscape. Key priorities include: streamlining advertising rules, ensuring a level playing field between traditional and digital media, protecting minors on video-sharing platforms, and maintaining the prominence of media services of general interest. The review will also align AVMSD with other EU legislation, including the Digital Services Act.
The consultation focuses on four areas: scope and enforcement, audiovisual commercial communications, viewer protection, and media diversity in the internal market. Feedback is invited from citizens, regulators, companies, NGOs, media associations, and academics.
The consultation is open until 1 May 2026
